Biking Missouri’s Katy Trail
Stretching across much of northern Missouri, the Katy Trail is the longest developed rail-trail in the United States. It is more than 240 miles long and passes through small towns, river valleys, forests, farmland, and scenic bluffs. The crushed limestone trail follows much of the Missouri River corridor and provides cyclists with an opportunity to experience some of the state's most beautiful landscapes at a relaxed pace.
While there are many excellent places to begin a Katy Trail adventure, Hermann stands out as one of the most popular. Its central location, welcoming amenities, historic charm, and easy access to some of the trail's most scenic sections make the town a convenient starting point.
A Brief History of the Katy Trail
The Katy Trail served as part of the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad, commonly known as the "Katy Railroad." Beginning in the late 1800s, the railway transported passengers, agricultural products, and goods throughout the region.
As rail transportation declined, large portions of the railroad corridor were abandoned, and conservation groups worked to preserve the corridor through the growing rails-to-trails movement. The result was the creation of Katy Trail State Park, which transformed the former railroad into a recreational trail while preserving an important piece of Missouri history.

Famous Sites Along the Katy Trail
Rocheport Tunnel
The Rocheport Tunnel is one of the most photographed landmarks along the entire Katy Trail. Built in 1893, the historic railroad tunnel stretches beneath a limestone ridge and features overlooks of the Missouri River.
Missouri River Bluffs
Between Rocheport and McBaine, cyclists encounter towering limestone bluffs that rise above the trail and river corridor. This stretch is widely considered one of the most scenic portions of the Katy Trail.
Jefferson City Railroad Bridge
Near Missouri's capital city, riders cross a massive former railroad bridge spanning the Missouri River. The bridge offers panoramic views of the river and surrounding landscape.
Historic Depot Towns
Many communities along the route retain restored railroad depots that serve as reminders of the trail's origins. Towns such as Sedalia, Boonville, Clinton, and Hermann feature preserved railroad history.
Augusta Wine Country
Located near the eastern end of the trail, Augusta is home to one of America's first federally recognized wine regions. Cyclists often stop here to enjoy vineyards and scenic countryside views.
